For many people who find themselves accused of a criminal offense, one of the biggest worries is how they will ever be able to get a good job again. This is a legitimate concern as the ability to get a job can be integral to prevent falling into a downward spiral. However, defendants should know that it may well be possible to get a job even with a criminal record, including a driving under the influence offense.

The Chronicle suggests that job seekers prioritize the types of jobs they would like to apply for in part based on how those jobs may be impacted by their DUI charge. For example, jobs that require a person to drive a company vehicle may pose a greater challenge so focusing on positions that do not involve driving on the job may be a better place to start a search. It is also important to remember that some DUIs do not result in a conviction if a person has gone through a program that allows them to avoid this, so only the arrest may be on their record.

If a person gets far enough in a job interview process, the time will come when they should disclose their past to a potential employer. These conversations should highlight how the person has grown since that event.
